Life of an Engineer

Before I “Get Set Go..” with this blog, let me tell you all that I’m an Electrical Engineer by profession, alumnus of NIT/REC Durgapur. I know that this introduction of mine will certainly not add great value to my existence, as engineers are found in abundance in this part of the world. But I must also tell you this makeover was not all that simple….at least for me. It was nearly 2 years of travail to get into college and 4 years of slog thereafter. “College life was fun” – as most of us say is not all that funny. It’s the attitude with which we sail through it makes all the difference.

8 semesters, 40 odd papers, 30 odd Vivas and almost 100 tests & class tests…..can it be facile..? not really.! But I did it as all do it. It was a proud feeling & why it shouldn’t be? Especially when all eyes are on you…your family, friends', kith and keen’s. Getting job in campus selection made it real special for me. The company was a market leader in my stream. It couldn’t have been better. That was by far one of the most euphoric moments in my life. With a great zeal I was ushering into next phase of my life – The professional life. Although, I was well conversant with the fact that I was not any “Scientist” in the making who will be making “Rockets” and thereby I never reckoned to do different things…. but yes, doing things differently.
.
...
.....
.......It has now been nearly 30 months since then. And it is now that I have realized that all my engineering studies are going down the drain. It wouldn't be exaggeration if I say that I’m utilizing even 1% of all that we studied in those 4 years. While going for campus selection, these companies set very high standards by short listing only toppers followed by a decent technical test & personal interview. But when it comes to work, they virtually deny us to apply our brain. Work has barely got any relevance to college learning. At this node, I must also confess that I have, at times regretted the moments when I decided to pursue my carrier as an engineer. Any streetwise guy can manage to work as a proxy for us. Why to exploit Engineers then..??

Well, this opens the room for discussion – Is there a problem with institutes who teach us or the industries who hire us? Who is at fault? Whoever it may be, we are the Victims.

But, when one goes down to the micro-level to investigate both the bodies, it can be realized that, on one hand curriculum in our college is well structured with contemporary updates and on the other hand, Industries too offer a decent training programs to the fresh entrants. Where lies the problem then..? May be the quality of college education and the Industry’s training modules, although contemporary, are not at par with each other. May be both run in parallel, but are not complementary.

In my opinion, we need to have a greater degree of interface between both these bodies. Organizing discussion forums by involving the students and the alumni will certainly prove to be advantageous. Prevailing scenario demands objective based learning and it can’t be achieved without involving its arch-members.

The trend although incipient, but has begun already. One has to wait and watch what’s up the sleeve for our future engineers.

Chandan, you are not alone. The same feelings come to all engineers who join workplace. The imagined and expected work never greets them there. But that is life. I won't say that there is no engineering application towards engineering jobs. There are, but we don't think them so because it comes naturally to us. Put another science graduate in your place, and s/he won't be able to handle the job, I can bet. It is true that in most of the jobs in most of the Indian MNC or either companies, jobs don't involve basic engineering design innovations. Because India as a manufacturing location or industrial setup has not yet achieved the same status as the Europeans enjoy. But if we try to take interest in the Netty-gritty of whatever job we are doing, we shall be able to extract the work satisfaction. It takes time, but i is possible. Your suggestions regarding industry-university interactions is a good one, at least it will help in removing undue expectations from the young engineers.

I found the Lyrics "Unforgiven" from Metallica very close to this blog. I would like to share it further to my blog..

    Here is how it goes..........

    New blood joins this earth
    And quickly he's subdued
    Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules

With time the child draws in
    This whipping boy done wrong
    Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man strugggles on and on he's known
    A vow unto his own
    That never from this day
    His will they'll take away
    Chorus

    What i've felt
    What i've known
Never shined through in what i've shown
    Never be
    Never see
Won't see what might have been
    What i've felt
    What i've known
Never shined through in what i've shown
    Never free
    Never me
    So i dub thee UNFORGIVEN

    They dedicate their lives
    To running all of his
He tries to please then all
    This bitter man he is
    Throughout his life the same
    He's battled constantly
    This fight he cannot win
A tired man they see no longer cares
    The old man then prepares
    To die regretfully
That old man here is me
    Chorus

    You labeled me
    I'll label you
    So i dub thee UNFORGIVEN

My Commute Memoir

City has started to unlock itself from pandemic. After months of being indoors, I too decided to break free and go for a long drive.  It was a clear sky Sunday noon. Wearing home made mask, I drove past eastern express highway while light FM music played in the car. I headed towards Powai. Near IIT gate, while waiting at signal, I saw the bus AC125 passing by. It was the same bus and same stop from where I use to commute years ago when I stayed in Powai. It recalled some fond memories. In one incident, I had witnessed remarkable farewell of a bus conductor on his last day at work. It pulled me deep into flashback and recalled my commute routine of those days. With it I remembered a girl who also commuted regularly in this bus. It is still fresh in my memory when I first saw her. It was an usual busy Monday morning, I was waiting at this stop. Getting a seat in the bus would have been ideal for me to relax and calm myself. The bus had arrived on time and I boarded. It was getting c...

Paranormal Activity

Sometimes, they appear! They come from the world of supernatural. Their apparitions confront us in dreams, in solitude and sometimes in a revulsive experience. Some believe it as spirit, while for some it’s a delusion. It comes like a sudden blizzard of the falling asteroid, all the way from galaxies and soaks into your soul to have one and the only rendezvous with you. Or it might behave like a swinging pendulum; hitting you back at unknown intervals and shocking you at each occurrence. At times, this Intermittency would delude you that the pendulum is entangled at the other end and would not haunt anymore. But they come back – why? Scientific commune have their versions of explanations or you might have developed indigenous interpretations. I’ve experienced the hits of this swinging pendulum - impactful enough to change the course of my life every time it hit.  I was twelve when it all started I was strolling on the balcony that day. The evening lull was giving way to the...

Childhood ignorance

Memories of childhood are cherished by everyone & I’m no exception to it. Different people have different ways of remembering it. Some chuckle on the pranks they played, some treasure the friends they had. While sharing lighter moments, some divulge those funny incidents that are still undiscovered by others.(viz eating chetan’s tiffin in the classes, 1st movie in talkie by bunking Poonam ma’am class, that 1st fag on Vicky’s terrace….& yada-yada-yada). My retrospection to the childhood has a different facet. I’m sure one would start doubting my IQ level by the time he reaches the end of this Blog. The Chariot ride The very first incidence on this juncture dates back when I was a toddler. We were riding a chariot, when my inquisitive mind asked this question to papa – “Why is this horse not wearing pants?” ……….This question still fazes my parents whenever they recollect that moment & I start groping for the answer as I still don’t have it. Interview in Class IV Second flash...

A Girl in Minneapolis

A Russian Girl and an Indian Boy Met in US semi-fictitious story of their tender vividness Part 1 I was getting ready in the morning for the training workshop, which was in its second week. Starting today, participants would change as next module was starting now on. It was mostly mid aged salespeople who attended the training last week. I was expecting them to be replaced with relatively young faces due to very nature of training, which was getting hands-on from today. Igor continued the workshop this week but his other Russian friends had left. He occupied same seat as he did throughout the training so far; and so did rest of the continuing participants including me. It was about 9 AM when a tall, young, well-groomed up girl occupied the corner seat in first row next to Igor. I noticed her and so would have others as she was little late in arriving. I was hoping that she would look around and make eye contact with us to get an idea of participants - but actually she d...

C'est la vie

“Hey buddy..!, congratulations…! Results are out, you are selected.”….I hanged-up the mobile…closed my eyes…acknowledged this achievement..& thanked the people who made it happen. Pattering sound of train, the one in which I was traveling-back to college after interview, re-stroke my ears as I came back to normal after the Euphoria. I just re-captured the moments of my campus selection for you. This was the point of time when everything around me was transforming. College premises, mates, professors…everything felt fresh. And with the same fresh air I went to join my maiden company in the summer of 2004. The company was ABB and I was placed at Bangalore. It was fag end of 2007, when I left the company and the place... (may be for the time being). But, when I sum up my life of 3 years over there…I find it a nice package of development in my personal and professional conduct. Let me go back into the memory lane and share a few with you. The most cherished times were a couple of trip...

Where Is My Love!

I Woke up in the morning over a kiss of golden Sun-Shine, I Glimpsed through the window & the vista was all so Fine, Birds singing around, trees swaying Together, Breeze caressing my cheeks, It was never so Better, “What’s so special today…tell me.….by Jove !” It all rhymed – “It’s Love, It’s Love, I t’s Love !”  As I walked along the coast, Clouds hove in angelic Line. They crooned a choral in my ears – “We are on cloud Nine!” As I looked up to the sky, raindrop splashed on my Temple, It drizzled on my face and the em brace was so Gentle. “Why is the elation and why is this tender Shower?” It rustled – “Love’s in Air, Love’s in Air, Love’s in Air”. Mountains enduring the scourge in Equanimity, Emanating the peace & rediscovering the Tranquility. Sun on the fire, bridling the planeta ry Rings, Charming the mornings & romanticizing the Evenings. Love brings generous endowments, Love is the Secret, “Love endures, Love blossoms; Love is svelte, Love is Great....

The Beer Mystery

The year 1998 witnessed many bizarre incidents such as 66-day power crisis at Auckland, Series of Nuclear tests conducted by Pakistan and Human bomb explosion in Coimbatore. There was one more incident, quite different in nature that took place that year and remained untold. That dramatic event is now being unfolded here as I understand that the aftereffect of this revelation won’t be severe for its protagonists. The Lead character is Indeed I, supported by one of my close companions of those times – Alok . It were relaxed times after +2 exams. Results were awaited. We took this leisure period as an opportunity to pursue one of our interest areas – Bodybuilding. Days were passing cozily until the day we encountered that incident. I still remember early morning scene of that day. It was about 9 O’clock in the morning when we were returning from the Gym. At the crossroads near our house, our bicycle was stopped by our informer. He came running in gasping and said: “Two beer cans of last...
